Liverpool confirm Gerrard as new U18s boss ahead of 2017-18

Liverpool have confirmed that Steven Gerrard will be appointed as U18s manager ahead of next season.

Sky Sports reported last month that the 36-year-old will begin his managerial career at his former club.

Gerrard returned to Anfield as an academy coach in January following his retirement from playing in 2016 and he will replace Neil Critchley, who is to step up and assume charge of the U23s.

Gerrard said: “I have really enjoyed my time at the academy so far and feel I have learnt a lot from the coaching staff here already.

“After speaking to (academy director) Alex Inglethorpe, we feel as though it is time for me to step up and manage my own team.

“Neil has done a fantastic job with the U18s, so I hope I can continue where he left off, encouraging and nurturing players into the U23s and eventually the first-team setup.”

Inglethorpe said: “Steven has brought invaluable experience and knowledge to us since joining the academy, passing on some fantastic advice and guidance to our younger players.

“The U18 players can undoubtedly only learn from having someone like Steven in charge and we have no doubt that he will prove to be a huge success in the position.”

Critchley’s switch to U23s boss comes after nearly four years in charge of the U18s overseeing the development of players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Woodburn and Ovie Ejaria, who have since been part of the first team.

“This is also a fantastic opportunity for Neil to step up too and manage the U23s team,” Inglethorpe said. “He has done a brilliant job with the U18s since joining us in 2013 and I am sure he will continue to help with the progression of players into the first team.”

Gerrard hung up his boots after a spell with LA Galaxy, following a playing career that consisted of 710 appearances, 186 goals and 10 trophies with Liverpool.
