Beat me and I’ll dump you

Following Mercy Aigbe’s recent separation from her husband, Lanre Gentry, as a result of prolonged domestic violence, former Chocolate City female rapper, Pryse, has openly condemned the act. In a recent interview , the fast budding rapper advised women to resist any form of violence from their partners to avoid becoming a victim. In her opinion, violence in any relationship is unhealthy; therefore she would never allow any man raise a finger at her. Singer, Pryse “I feel any woman that is being abused by a man should not be with that man. I believe she should leave, I think she should just leave; because if he does that, he is probably going to keep doing it, let him not kill you one day”, she advised. Okowa condemns alleged plan to hijack Buhari’s govt

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has condemned alleged moves by some military personnel to remove the government of the day through a coup d’état. Okowa told newsmen on Sunday that any politician wooing the military to take over, is an enemy of the country. The governor spoke at the sideline of a Christian event organised in Benin City, Edo State. He, therefore, called on Nigerians to mobilize and fight against such moves, saying that rather than that, what the President Muhammadu Buhari needs now is prayers. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, also condemned the rumours, warning officers to bury such ideas.

Barca set date to announce new coach after Copa del Rey

Barcelona will name its new coach on May 29, two days after the Copa del Rey final, president Josep Bartomeu confirmed on Sunday after the club’s title chase came up short. Reports in the Barcelona media last week said the club have already agreed a two-year deal with Athletic Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde. Luis Enrique said in March he will be leaving the club after the season, and Bartomeu confirmed the timeline for announcing his replacement. “We thank Luis Enrique for the effort he has put in the demands he placed on himself. The door is open. Now we have the Copa,” Bartomeu said. “On May 29, we have a board meeting and we will announce the name of the new coach after.” Asked about Valverde, Bartomeu only said: “”He is a coach who is out of contract in the summer.” Real Madrid finished atop the table in La Liga, three points above second-placed Barcelona, who will still contest the cup final against Alaves on Saturday. “Obviously we congratulate the champions and our players for

Arsenal miss out on Champions League spot, Liverpool join Man City

Arsenal failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 20 years in spite of winning on the final day of the 2016/2017 English Premier League. The Gunners began the day on Sunday a point behind fourth-place Liverpool and were on course to displace the Reds when they took an eighth-minute lead against Everton before winning 3-1. But Liverpool, needing a win to ensure fourth, broke Middlesbrough’s resistance just before the break, and won 3-0 at Anfield. Newsmen report that Manchester City claimed third with a very easy 5-0 win at Watford to maintain third place. Arsenal’s remarkable run of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League in 19 consecutive seasons came to its widely anticipated end on Sunday. Hope had grown among the home support when Hector Bellerin gave them an early lead and news was that Liverpool were struggling against the relegated Middlesbrough. But in first-half stoppage time, Georginio Wijnaldum enlivened Anfield with a stunning strike, and Jurg

Biafra Remembrance Day: Count us out of Uwazuruike’s May 22 celebration

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign state of Biafra (MASSOB) has said that it is not part of, and will not participate in a planned celebration of the Biafra Remembrance Day on another date , May 22, by a group called Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) led by Chief Ralph Uwuazrurike, saying the date is not the original remembrance day for Biafra. A statement by MASSOB’s factional leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu, distanced MASSOB from the Uwazuruike’s group while urging its supporters to rather troop out en mass on May 30 which is the real Biafra Remembrance Day and shun that of May 22. “We have reiterated our solemn oath taking for actualization and restoration of an independent Republic of Biafra, we reassure the people of Biafra that actualization and restoration of Biafra is sacrosanct and sacred. Chelsea Manning releases first photo of herself since leaving prison

Chelsea Manning’s nearly seven years in prison ended yesterday, and today she posted the first photo of herself since being released. “Okay, so here I am everyone!! =P” she wrote, posting the photo on Instagram and Twitter. Very little has been seen of Manning, who lived as Bradley Manning seven years ago, since her incarceration for disclosing information to WikiLeaks. A grainy selfie and an official portrait were used repeatedly in media stories about her. Since her early release — the result of a commuted sentence from President Obama — Manning has set up an Instagram to share new photos of her life outside of prison. Besides the new photo of herself, early entries included a shot of her first steps beyond bars.

America is back and the world wants Trump

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson declared Thursday that the Middle East and the wider world are awaiting President Donald Trump’s first foreign tour with eager anticipation. Dismissing concerns that the domestic scandals dogging Trump have hurt his international standing, Tillerson said his trip marked the return of a vital US leadership role. Governments in the Middle East, Asia and Africa were, he argued, stung by the “neglect and outright dismissal” of their concerns under the previous US administration. “They’re ready to re-engage with America,” he told reporters. “And that is the purpose of this trip — it is really one of conveying the message that ‘America is back’.” Under Trump, he said, the United States will once again act as a “facilitator,” uniting and leading friendly nations in the war against “global terrorism.” “This is not a battle about religions. This is not a battle about cultures. This is a battle about good and evil,” he said, shortly before joining the presid

Valbuena accuses ‘impotent’ Benzema over sex-tape ‘slander’

Lyon midfielder Mathieu Valbuena on Wednesday launched an emotional attack on Karim Benzema over the sex-tape saga, accusing the Real Madrid star of “slander” . “Slander is the weapon of the impotent, it is distressing !!! Justice will restore the truth,” Valbuena posted on his Twitter account. Valbuena was responding to comments made by Benzema in French sports daily L’Equipe’s online edition the day before. Both men missed Euro 2016 on home soil after an investigation was launched into alleged blackmail in a sex-tape scandal featuring Valbuena which is likely to go to court in France later this year. Investigators suspect Benzema of acting as an intermediary between the presumed blackmailers, including childhood friend Valbuena. On Tuesday Benzema laid the blame for the fallout of the sex tape scandal squarely on the shoulders of Valbuena, the alleged victim. He went as far as accusing Valbuena of lying just two days ahead of France naming their squad for upcoming 2018 World Cup qu

Trump says he is worst-treated politician in history

Donald Trump has claimed that “no politician in history” has been “treated worse or more unfairly” than he has. The US President was speaking on the day he faced calls to be impeached over his handling of the sacking of former FBI director James Comey and his relationship with Russia. Offering “advice” to new recruits at a coastguard graduation ceremony in New London, Connecticut, he quickly turned the focus on his recent difficulties. “Over the course of your life you will find that things are not always fair,” he said. “You will find that things happen to you that you do not deserve, and that are not always warranted, but you have to put your head down and fight, fight, fight!” Warming to his theme, Mr Trump added: “Never, ever, ever give up – things will work out just fine. “Look at the way I’ve been treated lately – especially by the media. “No politician in history … has been treated worse or more unfairly. “You can’t let them get you down. Osinbajo cannot replace Buhari in 2019 if anything happens to PMB

The Northern Elders Forum has declared that the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo cannot replace President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 should anything happen to Buhari who has been abroad for a medical follow-up. Chairman of Northern Elders Forum, Professor Ango Abdullahi, said should President Muhammadu Buhari fail to seek re-election in 2019, the North must retain the presidency by fielding a candidate through the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, party. Abdullahi said although Professor Osinbajo, according to the constitution, should be allowed to complete the current tenure being Buhari’s Vice, he must not contest in 2019 should Buhari fail to recontest for a second term. “The constitutional provision says that in the event that the president dies in office or becomes incapacitated for one reason or the other and cannot perform the duties of his office, he will be succeeded by the Vice president.” “But no one is in a position to know at what point he is going to recover ful

Jonathan’s six yrs presidency a wasted opportunity for Ijaw Nation

Seriake Dickson has said that the six years that the Ex-President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan spent as Nigeria’s president was a wasted opportunity for the Ijaw people. Governor Dickson made the comment on Tuesday while speaking at a conference of Ijaw leaders and youths who had gathered for the annual celebration of their hero, Major Adaka Boroh at the Ijaw House, Yenegoa. According to Dickson, Ministers and presidential aides from Ijaw who worked with the ex-president for six years failed to work with him in the interest of the Ijaw people but were after selfish interests. He said this made the six years of former President Jonathan a wasted period for the Ijaw people who thought their son had gotten to the helm of political affairs of this nation to change their lots for the better. •Gov Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa Governor Dickson maintained that, as such, “they suffered from the Bayelsa-Ijaw disease of pulling-him-down syndrome.” “It is true that we are celebrating Boroh, but ask you

PETER SILBERMAN IS DIGGING FOR SILENCE VIDEO

One morning in 2014, Peter Silberman woke to a roaring in his left ear. Sounds, even the soft ones, suddenly hurt; he could barely stand to hear his own voice. Such a sudden shift in sensory experience would be troubling for anyone, but Silberman found himself facing an especially steep challenge. He had just released a new album with his band The Antlers, and was scheduled to go on tour, give interviews, and run through the usual promotional circuit as the group's lead singer. “I was like, ‘Oh shit, we have a six-week tour coming up and two weeks of rehearsals. I'm not sure I'm ever going to be able to sing again or play music again,’” he tells me at the bar of a coffee shop in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, a few blocks from the apartment where he'll be performing later. “And then at the slightest decrease of [the pain], I was like, ‘OK, I guess I gotta get back in the saddle and see if it's possible and inch my way toward it. If I stretch this threshold a li

Juventus’ Buffon the greatest No. 1 of all time – Dybala

Juventus forward Paulo Dybala has said Gianluigi Buffon is the greatest of all time after the 39-year-old goalkeeper helped his side to another Champions League final. Buffon has been in inspired form, conceding only three goals in 12 European games this season, and Dybala said he was honoured to be in the same team. He told Sky Sport 24: “Gigi, for me, is certainly the No. 1 of all the No. 1s in the history of football. “We’re all lucky to be able to work with him, and I hope it remains that way for a long time to come.” Buffon has yet to win the Champions League, but has another chance to lift the trophy when Juve face Real Madrid in Cardiff. The miserly Juventus defence has conceded an average of just 0.2 goals per game, and Dybala said that would give them a chance against Real. “Our defence is a wall,” he said. “I’ve suffered against it as an opponent and now I am revelling in it with my teammates.”

Shiek Nasiru Bazallah, has been arraigned by the Nigeria Police before a Kano Magistrate Court for allegedly insulting the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, with the intent to provoke a breach of peace. The prosecution alleged that the cleric incited disturbance and attempted to defame the character of the monarch, contrary to Section 114, 392 and 399 of the penal code. First Information Report stated that on May 8, 2017 Emir Sanusi lodged a complaint to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, alleging that the defendant, on March 20, 2017, acted in a manner which defamed the monarch’s character. Furthermore, the report alleged that the Islamic scholar gathered his adherents at Goron Dutse quarters, where he made statements to incite disturbance and defame the monarch. But the defendant said the allegations levelled against him were false, urging the court to admit him to bail. Our correspondent observed that in the 31-second video, the two policemen – both wearing the traffic jackets – were unsuccessfully separated by three pedestrians, as the brawl caused traffic at the Muhammadu Buhari Junction. A motorist, identified only as Aishat, had taken the video, shared it on her Facebook page, and lamented that the policemen had blocked the road and caused congestion. “Traffic wardens are fighting by Muhammadu Buhari Junction along Ahmadu Bello Way. Please, send help there right now. They have caused congestion,” she wrote. It was not yet clear as of press time the division the policemen were attached to. The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Usen Omorodion, could not yet be reached for comment on the incident as of press time.

China’s Xi Jinping says he will 'protect' Paris climate deal, as it hangs in the balance

Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, has vowed to protect the Paris Agreement on climate change, as the future of the accord hangs in the balance. The Chinese leader pledged his support for the 2015 deal to tackle global warming and curb fossil fuel emissions in a phone call with French President-elect Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday. His comments came as US president Donald Trump considers withdrawing from the accord – a promise he made during his election campaign. The issue was also raised on Tuesday by former US president Barack Obama, who called on Beijing and Washington to work together on the environment. Mr Xi told Mr Macron that China and France "should protect the achievements of global governance, including the Paris Agreement", according to a statement released by China’s foreign ministry. Mr Trump was expected to meet with key advisors on a possible withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on Tuesday. However the meeting was reported to have been cancelled. The US presid

Emirate Airlines said it recorded profit of 670 million dollars in its 2016/2017 financial year, which ended on March 31, 2017. The airline, which made this known in a statement by its spokesman, Ijeoma Okolie, on Thursday in Abuja, said that the performance reflected steady business growth in 29 consecutive years. It announced a cash balance of 5.2 billion dollars, but stated that the figure represented 19 per cent drop from the preceding period’s record. The airline attributed the decrease in the cash balance for the period to the repayment of two bonds on maturity and investment into its fleet and aircraft-related assets. It said that its workforce was currently over 105,000 and that its capacity crossed 60 billion available tonne kilometres. It added that it acquired 35 new aircrafts and “retired’’ 27 older aircrafts during

Man United edge Celta Vigo to book Europa League final place

Manchester United are just one win away from Champions League qualification after booking their place in the Europa League final with a 1-1 draw on the night and 2-1 aggregate victory over Celta Vigo. Maroune Fellaini set United on their way, with Facundo Roncaglia’s equaliser at Old Trafford giving the hosts a late scare, but they held on to advance into a May 24 final in Stockholm against Ajax, who progressed past Lyon in their last-four tie.Celta started the game the stronger and could well have taken the lead four minutes in when Iago Aspas cut into the box from the right before firing a strike at goal that Sergio Romero did well to tip over. However, any Old Trafford nerves were calmed in the 17th minute when Fellaini put United ahead, meeting Marcus Rashford’s excellent delivery at the far post to head in past Sergio Alvarez. Pablo Hernandez saw a curled effort from distance tipped over by Romero 10 minutes later, while Daniel Wass headed a Pione Sisto cross just wide before

Buhari takes me as brother, treats me like son, says Osinbajo

In a manner that apparently portrays an affinity between them, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has said that President Muhammadu Buhari sees him as a brother and also treats him like his son. He spoke in Katsina, the home state of President Buhari on Thursday while launching the State’s version of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise, MSMEs clinic. Osinbajo’s latest position has overtly countered the perception in some quarters that there may not be any love lost between him and his boss following the wording of a recent letter the President wrote to the National Assembly, announcing a transfer of power to him (Osinbajo). President Buhari had on Sunday at the verge of his departure to London for a follow-up on his medicals written to the National Parliament, informing the lawmakers of his trip abroad in the fulfillment of Section 145 of the 1999 constitution. While many expected the president to categorically state that Osinbajo would “act” in his stead, the President in the letter said
