Wike moves to ban 5,000 unapproved schools in Rivers

The Rivers State government says it has concluded plans to ban all unapproved schools operating in the state with effect from September this year. State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Kaniye Ebeku, disclosed this when he led members of the Rivers state House of Assembly Committee on Education on an inspection of ongoing rehabilitation work at Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta in company of officials of the state Ministry of Education. Prof. Ebeku said about five thousand illegal private schools are operating in the state. He said that publications will be done in both National and local papers in the coming days with the full names of the affected schools. According to Ebeku, “We found that there are so many unapproved quacks schools operating in the state and this is not acceptable for many reasons. NYSC member arrested while allegedly attempting to break ATM, steal in Kogi

A National Youth Service Corps, NYSC member, identified as Aka-Jude Tersoo, has been arrested alongside an accomplice while attempting to break into and rob an Automatic Teller Machine, ATM, in Kogi State. The suspect was caught with a locally made gun. Tersoo was among the 36 suspects arrested in the last one week in the state. The police also apprehended five persons said to be members of the Boko Haram sect were apprehended by the officers and men of the command. Addressing journalists on arrested criminals yesterday in Lokoja, the Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, said that the culprit, Akah Jude Tersoo, who was posted to the state for the one-year national service, was caught alongside an accomplice, Godwin Idih, on April 26th around 2.30am.
