Abdulsalami Abubakar lauds Peaceful transition of power in Liberia

Former military Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) on Sunday hailed the ongoing peaceful transition of democratic government to another in Liberia.
Abubakar told newsmen that the development was yet another testimony of the rapid growth and development of democracy in the African continent.
The former leader spoke shortly after arriving at the country for Monday’s inauguration of Liberia’s President-elect, George Weah.
“It is a pleasure to see that in our region democracy is growing from strength to strength.
“Liberia is a sister country to Nigeria, and during the Liberian crisis, the world knows the sacrifice Nigeria made in this country in terms of human and material resources.
“I commend the Nigerian government, the troops and Nigerians who supported Liberia during the crisis to arrive at this day.’’
Abubakar, who led an ECOWAS mediation team that negotiated the setting up of an interim government in 2003 after the Liberia civil war, said the country was dear to his heart.
He advised the incoming administration to deepen democracy in the country and sustain the peace enjoyed under outgoing President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf since she came on board in 2005.
“It is an interest for me as the mediator to see the work we did is blossoming from strength to strength.
“That’s why when I had the invitation of both the outgoing President and the president-elect to attend this inauguration, I did not hesitate to come.
“The incoming should build on what his predecessor has done, and also to widen the field of democracy.
“He should learn from his brothers and sisters in the region; his brother Heads of States and Heads of Governments in the region.
“He should not shy away from seeking advice and assistance in order to help this country,’’ he said.
Newsmen report that Liberia is witnessing its first transfer of power from one democratically elected president to another in more than 70 years.
The country held peaceful general elections in October and a presidential run-off poll in December that saw Weah, an opposition candidate, defeating incumbent Vice President Joseph Boakai.
Newsmen also report that the former head of state arrived in a presidential jet, which touched down at the Roberts International Airport in Monrovia at 10:42 a.m.
He was received at the VIP wing by the Nigerian Ambassador to Liberia, Mr James Dimka, and the Force Commander for the United Nations Mission in Liberia, Maj.-Gen. Salihu Uba.
Abubakar is one of the special dignitaries from Nigeria to grace the inauguration holding at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is expected to represent President Muhammadu Buhari at the occasion, according to Nigerian embassy officials.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Senate President, Mr Bukola Saraki, and Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, are also expected to attend the ceremony.

.Kenyan President Ruto Unveils Cabinet Two Weeks After Swearing In

Kenyan President William Ruto on Tuesday named his first cabinet after winning a divisive election in August and defending his narrow victory in the country’s highest court. Ruto, who defeated his opponent Raila Odinga by some 200,000 votes, unveiled his new administration after calling the 26 ministers and cabinet-level appointees to a meeting at State House. Among those appointed were political allies whose support helped ensure Ruto, who served as deputy president in the former government, took the top job after an acrimonious campaign. The president thanked those who “worked and walked this journey to victory”. “Because of their contribution, because of their decision to work with us under very difficult circumstances, we won this election,” Ruto told reporters. Musalia Mudavadi, whose party forged an alliance with Ruto, was named prime cabinet secretary, answering directly to the president and his deputy.
