TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is arranging to meet with Toyota Motor President Akio Toyoda to discuss how Japan should respond to U.S. President Donald Trump's trade demands ahead of the two leaders' first summit meeting in early February. A government source said the meeting, tentatively scheduled for Friday in Tokyo, will also be attended by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga. The three men will focus on how Japan should respond to Trump's demand that Japanese carmakers invest and create more jobs in the U.S. The meeting is also aimed at demonstrating to people in Japan and overseas that Japan's government and industry are working closely together to address trade issues with Washington, according to the source. After his inauguration, Trump told manufacturers to invest more in the U.S. to create jobs. He blasted Toyota over its plans to build a new plant in Mexico. Trump ha

Jonathan, Wike blocked Rivers from taking possession of helicopters – America

A former Governor of Rivers State, Mr . Rotimi Amaechi, has blamed former President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Nyesom Wike for the inability of the state to take possession of the two helicopters , which were seized by the Nigeria Customs Service and handed over to the Nigeria Air Force last week . Amaechi, who is now the minister of transportation , was said to have initiated the importation of the helicopters while serving as the governor of the oil- rich state . Wike said in an interview on Saturday that the two helicopters were brought into the country by Amaechi with Rivers State money. He added that “ outrageous import imposed on the two helicopters delayed their clearance ” by the state government . But Amaechi said in a statement in Abuja on Sunday that the state government under his leadership decided to import the armoured helicopters to fight criminals who he said were masquerading as militants, kidnappers and all other elements while he held sway as the governor

French Socialists nominate leftwinger Hamon for president

France’s divided Socialists picked leftwinger Benoit Hamon as their presidential nominee Sunday, in the latest twist of a roller-coaster election race that has seen conservative frontrunner Francois Fillon engulfed in scandal. Near definitive results from a Socialist primary runoff vote Sunday showed Hamon beating his centrist rival Manuel Valls, a former prime minister, with 58.72 percent of the vote in a clear victory for the left-wing of the party. “Our country needs the left but a modern, innovative left turned towards the future,” the 49-year-old Hamon told cheering supporters in a victory speech. His triumph is another upset in the French poll race, with the former education minister and son of a dockworker viewed as an outsider only three weeks ago. His nomination completes the list of major candidates for the two-round election in April and May after five years of unpopular Socialist rule. Hamon’s rivals include rightwing Republicans nominee Fillon, far-right candid

Shabaab attacks Kenya army base in Somalia

Islamist Shabaab fighters attacked a Kenyan military base in southern Somalia on Friday in their latest assault on foreign and national army outposts. The attack on the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) base at Kolbiyow, close to the Kenyan border in Somalia’s Lower Juba region, began with suicide truck bombers blasting their way into the camp, followed by militants attacking from different directions. Shabaab claimed in a statement to have overrun the base, captured military vehicles and equipment and to have killed scores of Kenyan soldiers. “Fighters have taken control of the base and the overall Kolbiyow area after massacring the Kenyan infidels,” the statement said. KDF spokesman Paul Njuguna denied the base had been overrun, but gave no casualty figures. “We are engaging the enemy and we have actually repulsed them, but it is ongoing,” Njuguna said. Shabaab frequently overstates the death toll from its attacks while Kenya commonly underplays its losses. In January last yea

Theresa May and the Brexit divide

Glasgow, United Kingdom - When British prime minister Theresa May stood before the cameras to deliver her long-awaited major speech on Britain's exit from the European Union earlier this month, millions across the country and the EU bloc watched in earnest. The speech was billed as a chance to witness May's first detailed statement on Britain's Brexit future seven months after the nation voted by a slender 52-48 percent majority to revoke its decades-long membership of the institution. After months of incessant speculation where discourse centred on whether Britain's departure would constitute a so-called hard or soft Brexit, the Conservative Party leader announced her vision: not only would Britain be heading towards the EU exit door with gusto but it would also be leaving the EU single market and the EU customs union. Even allowing for May's proposal of retaining some kind of associate membership of the customs union, the British premier's speech sign

SENEGAL COACH - CISSE HAS UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Senegal coach Aliou Cisse still looks back at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations with a sense of unfinished business, so Saturday’s quarter-final against Cameroon offers a chance, partly, to settle an old score. The Lions of Teranga have never won the continental trophy, but they came mighty close 15 years ago in Mali when they reached the final for the first time. The other Lions, the Indomitable ones, stood in their way that day in Bamako and it was the Cameroon of Samuel Eto’o and Marc-Vivien Foe who came out on top in a penalty shoot-out following a goalless 120 minutes. Cisse, the midfielder and captain, missed Senegal’s last penalty that day and both he and the country are still waiting to lift the Cup of Nations. “A sense of unfinished business, a job not yet accomplished,” Cisse told AFP in Franceville when asked for his memories of 2002. “It is true that every day we say to the players: ‘Don’t make the error that we made’. “When you have the possibility to write his

CIA's Brennan Fire Back At Donald Trump's criticism, says dossier didn't come from intel community

John Brennan, the outgoing Central Intelligence Agency director, rejected President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion that he may have leaked the unsubstantiated dossier that claimed Russia had compromising allegations about Trump. “First of all, this is not intelligence community information,” Brennan said Monday. Brennan said he did not read the document and, according to the Wall Street Journal , gave it no particular credence. Trump blasted outgoing director on social media Sunday after Brennan said Trump does not have a “full understanding” of Russia’s power and threat to the world. “I don’t think he has a full understanding of Russian capabilities and the actions they are taking on the world,” Brennan told “Fox News Sunday.” He also suggested that Trump lacks a “full appreciation” of Russia’s aggression or about why President Obama imposed sanctions on the Kremlin for meddling in the 2016 presidential election. “Mr. Trump has to understand that absolving Russia is a road th

Too many vessels spoil the oil tanker rate

OPEC's coming output cuts could pull down rate even furtheThe 308,000 DWT crude oil tanker "Yuanteng Lake" berths at a port during the delivery and naming ceremony in Dalian city, northeast China's Liaoning province. TOKYO -- The freight rates that large oil carriers charge on certain routes have plunged about 30% since the beginning of the year. The reason is twofold: There are suddenly more tankers looking for work and less demand for their services because of OPEC's production cut. The benchmark Worldscale rate for very large crude carrier tankers in the 300,000-ton class has sharply fallen to around WS65 at present -- the lowest point since November -- for a voyage from the Middle East to the Far East. Less than three weeks ago, the voyage cost over WS90.

IMF Cut Down Nigeria’s growth to 0.8%, surging $27b reserves support forecas

After the World Bank Group said the country would grow by one per cent in 2017, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reduced the growth rate to 0.8 per cent. The differing numbers shows the continuous changes in economic activities, which are used in measuring growth, as well as an affirmation that each forecast is not the end. Nigeria’s growth rebound would be better than that of South Africa, projected at 0.8 per cent in 2017 and 1.6 per cent in 2018, while the sub-Saharan African economy, led by Nigeria, would record 2.8 per cent and 3.7 per cent for 2017 and 2018 respectively. The gradual gains in the foreign exchange reserves may have improved Nigeria’s outlook, as the steady price of crude oil add up the number to $26.96 billion yesterday. The new record represents eight-month record high, as it added no less than $600 million in the last seven trading days. In the last three months, the nation’s foreign exchange reserves have been on the ascendancy, raising the hopes

NATO ‘obsolete,’ says Trump as he praises Brexit

President-elect Donald Trump, in remarks likely to rattle US allies, described NATO as “obsolete” in an interview published in Monday editions of two European newspapers. He also hailed Britain’s exit from the EU and backed a speedy trade deal with the UK, but condemned as “catastrophic” Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision to open Germany’s doors to a flood of refugees. “I said a long time ago that NATO had problems,” Trump said, in remarks carried by The Times of London and Bild, Germany’s biggest-selling daily. “Number one, it was obsolete, because it was designed many, many years ago,” he said. “Number two, the countries aren’t paying what they’re supposed to pay.” “I took such heat, when I said NATO was obsolete. It’s obsolete because it wasn’t taking care of terror. I took a lot of heat for two days. And then they started saying Trump is right.” He added, though, “NATO is very important to me.” On the campaign trail, Trump said he would think twice about helping NATO alli

Biafra: Igbo leaders not committed to struggle – Nnamdi Kanu’s father

Father of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, His Royal Majesty, Eze Israel Okwu Kanu, has berated Igbo leaders for not committing themselves to the struggle for Biafra. Recall that Kanu was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, in 2015 in Lagos and has been incarcerated ever since. The IPOB leader is currently facing trial before an Abuja Federal High Court on an 11 count charge bordering on treasonable felony and terrorism. Speaking with The Sun, the Afara Ukwu, Ibeku monarch also frowned at the silence of Igbo leaders over the incarceration of his son. Stressing that his son was fighting a just cause, the monarch expressed surprise that Igbo leaders, especially the Abia state government have abandoned. Gambia's Barrow flies to Mali for crisis talks

Banjul - West African leaders flew out of Banjul late on Friday with The Gambia's president-elect Adama Barrow, en route to Mali for crisis talks with regional heavyweights in hopes of ending the nation's political impasse. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari led a three-nation delegation to Banjul earlier in the day, which his foreign minister admitted had not succeeded in getting longtime Gambian President Yahya Jammeh to step down. Jammeh has made clear he will not stand aside until the country's Supreme Court decides on his legal challenge seeking to annul the results of last month's polls, which he initially conceded losing. The Economic Community Of West African States (Ecowas), a 15-nation bloc, has repeatedly called on Jammeh to respect the result of the vote that delivered Barrow to victory, and step down after 22 years in power. "The Ecowas team has decided to depart Banjul tonight in the company of president-elect Barrow headed for Bamako, Mali,&qu

A turning point for The Gambia, the smiling face of Africa?

The Gambia’s presidential election crisis has been of particular personal interest for me. Between 2013 and 2014 I lived in the country as a law lecturer at the University of The Gambia. The experience was a fantastic one and helped me to understand why the country and its inhabitants are affectionately referred to as the “smiling face of Africa”. It was a year that moulded and shaped me, but also in some respects shocked me. During one of my lectures I looked up to see an unfamiliar face. Students later informed me that the individual was a member of the national intelligence agency detailed to monitor anti-government sentiment. This, however, is barely the tip of the iceberg of the ways in which Yahya Jammeh, defeated finally in the December 2016 presidential elections, behaved towards The Gambia and its citizens. Since YahyJammeh came into power in 1994, human rights violations have become a commonplace tool the regime uses to stay in power. Violations highlighted by internati
